How to Take Care of Your Skin in Winter

It’s easy to overlook the matter of skin care in the winter months. You are probably more aware of your skin’s needs in the summer months, when the hot sun is beating down and you have to take steps to prevent sun damage. However, just because the sun mostly goes away in the winter months – depending on where exactly you live – doesn’t mean that you can forget about your skin. In fact, the winter months may be even harder on your body’s outermost layer, so it’s important to have a game plan for skin care.
In this post, let’s work through a few basic tips that you can keep in mind to make it through winter with soft, moist skin. Of course, everyone’s individual situation will vary, so you will have to adapt your own plan to suit your local weather conditions, your skin’s needs, and more.

    Consider Using a Humidifier
There’s a good chance you already own a humidifier, as it is a great tool to use when you are dealing with a cold or flu. However, you don’t have to keep it tucked away in the closest when you aren’t sick, as a humidifier can help you manage skin problems, as well. One of the main issues that winter brings from a skin health perspective is dry air – so why not add a bit of humidity to mitigate the problem? Sure, you can’t do anything about the condition of the air outside your house, but you can easily add humidity to a room or two inside. Winter skin care doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. Try using a humidifier to bring some moisture back to your skin and you might not have to go much farther.

    Moderate Your Heat

Sure, there isn’t much that feels better than cranking up your thermostat when cold weather sets in. Who wouldn’t like cozying in to a warm house when the temperatures are plummeting outside? We aren’t saying you need to keep your house cold, but it would be smart to avoid setting your thermostat too high. When you kick your indoor temps up into the low or even mid- 70s, you are going to be drying out your air – and probably making your skin problems worse.
If you can live comfortably with your thermostat set somewhere south of 70, especially overnight as you sleep, you should fare better with regard to skin care. Also, since you will be using less energy along the way, you will be doing the environment a favor, and you’ll probably cut down on your utility bills, as well.

    In the Snow, Use Sunscreen

That’s right – you may still want to use sunscreen in the middle of the winter. If you live somewhere that frequently features snowy conditions, and you venture out on a sunny or partly sunny day, don’t make the mistake of leaving your sunscreen behind. All of that snow is going to reflect the sun’s rays, and they could potentially be harmful even if it isn’t hot outside. This is one of those things that’s hard to get used to at first, but it could be a big boost for your skin’s health if you get into the habit.

    Hydration is a Good Step

In the summer, it’s not hard to remember to stay hydrated. After all, you are probably sweating in the heat, and the need to replace your fluids is obvious. In the winter, however, the story is different. You probably don’t think as much about drinking plenty of water, and you may get a bit dehydrated as a result. That dehydration can show itself in the condition of your skin, so make it a point to drink plenty of fluids all year long.

    Wear the Right Clothes

Even something as simple as what you wear on a day to day basis can impact the health of your skin. Specifically, do what you can to keep any rough, harsh materials from being worn right up next to your skin all day long. Sure, you will need to wear some warm garments on cold days, but try to either pick soft items or wear a layer underneath anything that is rough. One classic example of a rough fabric is wool. Wearing a wool garment is a great way to stay warm, but if you allow that material to rub up against your skin throughout the day, it might do some minor damage (especially if your skin is already dry).
